Celebrities Use Instagram to Remind Ivanka Trump About DACA

Cara Delevingne, Olivia Wilde, and Alexa Chung joined in.

The fight for the Deferred Action For Childhood Arrivals program (DACA) is ongoing, and some celebrities have recently joined the conversation by trying to get Ivanka Trump's attention over Instagram.

On Thanksgiving this year (November 23), several stars such as Cara Delevingne, Olivia Wilde, and Alexa Chung took to social media to post identical messages to the First Daughter. The trend was started earlier in the day by Sophia Amoruso, and soon made its way to the feeds of other celebs. "Dear Ivanka, I see you're following me on Instagram," their notes began. "This Thanksgiving, I would be grateful if you use the influence you have to advocate for a CLEAN Dream Act by December."

The 'grams went on to point out that every day that goes by without a clean Dream Act will inevitably bring further anxiety to young people. "7,901 youth have already lost DACA and 122 more will lose it each day," the messages stated. Each Instagram post concluded with the same words: "Thank you and Happy Holidays."

President Trump had ordered an end to the DACA program back in September of this year, sparking outrage from citizens and advocacy groups. In the months that have passed since then, there has been little discussion of any new legislation, but activists and organizations have been working to raise awareness of the necessity for the program. Hopefully Ivanka will take notice of the urgent messages that appeared on her Instagram feed this week, as the end of DACA could mean that an estimated 800,000 young people are at risk for deportation, making it clear that something must be done — and soon.

If you're looking for a way to help DACA recipients, the Dream Act Tool Kit has compiled a list of legislators to call to encourage them to take action to save DACA. If you are a Dreamer and need help, organizations like the National Immigration Law Center, the Immigrant Defense Project, the Young Center for Immigrant Children's Rights and United We Dream are here for you, too.
