Olivia Rodrigo is getting Gracie Abrams to share some key details about her upcoming third studio album, Daughter from Hell, before the world gets to listen to it for the first time. The two pop stars are the latest guests on Spotify’s Countdown To interview series, and Teen Vogue has an exclusive first look at their episode, where Abrams gets candid about her absolute favorite lyric in the album.
In the new interview, Rodrigo sits down with Abrams to discuss the entire process of creating the album. While chatting, Rodrigo inquires about Abrams’s favorite lyric, and she doesn’t hesitate to pick one belonging to “Humming,” the fourteenth track on the album.
“The lyric that comes to mind when you ask that question is: ‘I’m convinced our sinking ship will sing as it goes down, haunting hymns keep echoing afterward in the ground,’” Abrams replies, teasing the upcoming song, slated to be debuted on July 17 along with the rest of the album.
Abrams also reveals she feels most of the songs on the album “feel more existential than diaristic" and that she went into writing the album “from a place of not having thought there was anything to say.” However, the end result was a perfect amalgamation of her experiences. This album to me feels like it’s defining this decade, being in our 20s [and] this in-between,” she adds.
Elsewhere in Teen Vogue's exclusive clip, Rodrigo and Abrams also discuss how the state of the world and politics influenced the song and the interpretations that come from it. In the interview, the two stars also discuss the album further, as well as their friendship and their perspectives and experiences on fame, touring, style, and everything in between.
