In a series of new text posts shared to her Instagram Story, Lili addressed her decision to take a Twitter hiatus.
"Re: the twitter situation," she begins the series of posts. "Unless you're personally experiencing it, you could never understand how it feels to have thousands of people spewing hate at you constantly."
She continues, saying, "I am not taking a break from Twitter because of one person's opinion." She goes on to explain that the reason she is taking a break is because Twitter is "not good for my mental health."
"Before you think about saying something ignorant like "she can't handle criticism,".....just try to imagine thousands of people sending you hateful, critical messages all day long, as if their opinion on your life matters," she wrote. "Then ask yourself if you think being twitter would be a healthy choice."
For her final post, she addresses her decision to speak up about the situation, saying, "I feel stupid for even having to explain myself but there's too much ignorance and negativity out there to not say something. That's just who I am."
Lili Reinhart has had enough of Twitter trolling — and she’s not backing down. On Sunday, December 16, the Riverdale actor posted a series of Instagram Stories airing her frustration with Twitter trolls and the “toxic” environment on Twitter. She also announced that she’s “taking a break” from the social platform for awhile.
“Do people on Twitter ever get tired of being so negative and disrespectful to literally everyone and everything?” she began in her post. “Are they really that miserable?”
“There’s hate everywhere,” she continued. “But especially Twitter. It’s like a cesspool for evil 15-year-olds who don’t know what the hell they’re talking about and have nothing better to do. Taking a break from that toxic site and the people on it who feel the need to attack me, my cast mates, my relationship, and Riverdale.”
While she doesn't specify the exact harassment she experienced that prompted her to share her thoughts, she makes a good point. The Internet gives us all an opportunity to connect with our favorite stars, but that doesn’t come with a free pass to be cruel or to make baseless assumptions about them; they’re real people, too, and words matter. “Hate to break it to you online trolls,” Lili ended her story. “Spreading your hate and overall negativity online won’t make you any less miserable.”
This isn’t the first time Lili has spoken up about the intense scrutiny she and her castmates receive online. In October, she tweeted about the constant speculation she deals with over her relationship with costar Cole Sprouse,, writing in a now-deleted tweet, “Can I tweet something stupid without everyone speculating that my relationship is suffering?? F*ck. Grow up."
While we hope Lili isn’t taking a permanent break from Twitter (we’d miss her!), we’re happy to know that she isn’t afraid to make her voice heard about the constant trolling celebrities receive, and that she’s standing up for what she believes in — Betty Cooper would be proud.
