Dissecting Wednesday's Style: 9 Key Looks from the Netflix Hit Series

If you watched Wednesday in full as soon as it hit Netflix on November 23, you are not alone. In just a week, the series broke the record for the most hours watched in a week for an English-language series on the platform, surpassing Stranger Things 4. Much of its popularity is, of course, thanks greatly to its sardonic protagonist, portrayed by Jenna Ortega. At the speed of light, Wednesday is becoming a phenomenon in its own right, and, of course, people are looking at the leading misanthrope for inspiration when it comes to fashion. If you are one of those people, you’ve stumbled upon the right article.

Throughout the show, we learn a lot about this version of Wednesday Addams’s sartorial choices. She has a penchant for black monochrome looks, though duochrome still has a space in her wardrobe with whites and grays. Unlike mom Morticia, who is never seen without her vampy lip and Shaun Leane spiky earrings, Wednesday keeps her makeup and accessories to a minimum, remaining faithful to her two long pigtail braids and black satchel-style backpack (which also doubles as Thing’s humble abode) for the most part. Her footwear du jour tends to favor stompers, and she loves to mix luxury and high-street fashion.

The clothes of the show, which many fans are praising online and ready to make their entire new personality, are thanks to Academy Award-winning costume designer Colleen Atwood, a long-time collaborator of Tim Burton. Speaking to Tudum, Atwood described Wednesday’s style in the show as a turbulent mix of Morticia and Gomez’s signature staples. She also shared that her style showed that she was “trying to conform but not quite fit it” until she gets to Nevermore Academy, where she taps into more playful looks, hence her preference for white collars and black dresses.

1. The Custom Uniform 

Once she arrives in Nevermore, Wednesday pretty much wears her uniform most of the time. Much like in the series’s storyline, the custom suit was custom created by Atwood and her team for Jenna. Speaking to Harper’s Bazaar, Atwood revealed the gray and black uniform was created using a silkscreen process to ensure the stripes were intentionally not even, containing more than one color so they would look less flat on camera. Though the piece is custom for the show, you can easily recreate it at home with separate pieces — a long pleated skirt, a blazer, a tie, a knitted vest, some tights or long socks, and a structured white shirt should do it. If you take things even more seriously, you could also go the cosplay route and get one custom-made for your size for Halloween — or daily use… we won’t judge.

Clothes aside, inarguably, one of the most striking details about Wednesday’s uniform look is her shoes: the infamous Prada monolith loafers. The silhouette, which debuted in 2019 and is available in various styles, is a favorite among celebs — and myself, not going to lie. We have seen everyone from Kendall Jenner and Bella Hadid to Avril Lavigne rocking them, and now Wednesday is bringing them back into the spotlight. Of course, they are very $$$, but there are plenty of similar options available to recreate the look. Or, you can always go for Docs — wearing a pair of patent leather platform loafers like the 1461s is always a good way of adding some texture to an all-black 'fit.

2. The Intro 'Fit

When we first meet Wednesday, she’s clad in a very familiar ‘fit. The black dress is probably the first image that comes to mind for most people when the character is mentioned. Atwood wanted to honor that. “We made the collar a little more pointed, but the idea was to do an homage everyone would be familiar with,” she told Harper’s Bazaar. “The series is set against the unusual backdrop of a bright, colorful American school, so she was immediately set apart from that by that look. So when we see her at school, that’s her uniform.”

Again, this look is custom for Jenna, but you could easily recreate it by layering a structured white top over a polka-dot dress.

3. The Explorer Attire

In her down (and exploring) time, Wednesday clothes are much more accessible. In fact, most come from high street shops, Zara to be exact, so finding the exact matches (like the one below) or similar options should not be a problem. Of course, she also has the holiest grail of emo folks: the Dr. Martens Jadon boots.

4. The Ball Dress

Now, this is where things get interesting. In the series, the dress Wednesday wears to the Rave'N dance is secured by Thing with a "five-finger discount" at the local antique shop. In real life, however, Atwood stumbled upon it serendipitously on a mannequin in London's luxurious Bond Street. The dress is by Alaïa, from the brand's Fall 2020 ready-to-wear collection, so it is no longer available to purchase. However, we do know its price was likely well into the four figures, something very few of us (let alone a regular teenager) could afford.  

The choice is perfect on-screen, though. "[The] fabric moves and does its job in such a great way that you usually see on dance costumes," Atwood told Harper's Bazaar. "It has these sheer layers that have so much life, so it doesn't just hang there like a chiffon dress. It moves really beautifully." Recreating this at home is trickier, given its quality, but a tulle skirt and a sheer button-up shirt with a cinching leather belt might do the trick.

6. The Lounging Favorite 

When she’s lounging around, Wednesday favors much more casual styles while sticking to her signature color palette. Stripes and oversized fits are combined with statement shoes and socks to make sure she always stands out, even in the shadows.

7. The Stylish Séance

During the earlier episodes of the series, when she’s holding a seánce to contact Goody Addams and even attending Jericho’s Harvest Festival plotting her escape, we see Wednesday donning a stripped button-up cardigan with a small sailor-style cape. 8.  The Cozy Monochrome

Wednesday clearly loves a check print, and this cozy mismatched number is also from Zara. Since it probably came out around the time the series was being filmed in Romania last year, it is no longer available to buy brand new, though there have been some spotting on secondhand sites like Poshmark. That said, there are plenty of similar styles available at different price points to craft your own look — just don't forget to add the black turtleneck underneath!

9.  The Business Casual 

Everyone needs a uniform that means business when cutting to the chase, and Wednesday's is a classic leather jacket. Her choice is sourced from the luxury British brand LK Bennett and features a cropped fit, four-pocket detail, and round, large buttons. She layers it over the aforementioned black turtleneck (we love a versatile piece!) and what appeared to be a cashmere crewneck gingham sweater from J.Crew. Much like the Zara vest mentioned above, this piece is also from late 2021 and is no longer available. However, the pattern is a classic so finding very similar options like the one below is not a challenge.
